The front camera on the Pixel 6 contains an 8 megapixel wide lens, while the one on the Pixel 6 Pro contains a 11.1 megapixel ultrawide lens. Both phones contain a 50 megapixel wide rear camera and a 12 megapixel ultrawide rear camera, with the Pixel 6 Pro featuring an additional 48 megapixel telephoto rear camera.
Both displays have HDR10+ support the Pixel 6 has a 90 Hz refresh rate and the Pixel 6 Pro has a 120 Hz variable refresh rate. The Pixel 6 has a 6.4 in (160 mm) FHD+ 1080p OLED display at 411 ppi with a 1080 × 2400 pixel resolution and a 20:9 ratio, while the Pixel 6 Pro has a 6.7 in (170 mm) QHD+ 1440p LTPO OLED display at 512 ppi with a 1440 × 3120 pixel resolution and a 19.5:9 ratio. They are each available in three colors: Pixel 6 The front of both phones also feature a centered hole-punch display notch. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro both feature a unique new design that is visually distinct from previous-generation Pixel phones, including a large camera bar and two-tone color scheme on the back. The Google Store did not offer any discounts for the devices on Black Friday, a departure from prior years. Pre-orders for the phones began on the same day as the announcement, with shipping commencing on October 25. Google also announced the official phone cases for the phones as well as the second-generation Pixel Stand wireless charger at the event, with the former going on sale on the same day with three color options per phone and the latter going on sale on November 18. The phones were not made available in India at launch due to supply chain issues. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were officially announced on October 19, 2021, at the " Pixel Fall Launch" event, and became available in nine countries on October 28. Furthermore, models of the phones were available on display at the Google Store Chelsea in New York City prior to the launch event. Additionally, the company partnered with Channel 4, the NBA, and Snapchat to promote the phones. Google kickstarted the phones' marketing campaign early, beginning with online videos, billboards in major cities, and magazine advertisements. A successor to the chip was reported to be in development by October 2021, believed to be for the Pixel 7. Despite being marketed as developed by Google, close-up examinations reveal that the chip contains numerous similarities with Samsung's Exynos series.
The chip is named after both Google's TensorFlow and Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) technologies. Previous Pixel devices had used chips from Qualcomm, with Google having begun developing its own chips (codenamed Whitechapel) in as early as 2016. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were previewed by Google on August 2, 2021, which confirmed the phones' new designs and the introduction of its custom Tensor system on a chip (SoC).
